Atglen and Parkesburg Fire Companies were dispatched at 3:49 pm for a report of a barn fire. Engine 26-3 arrived with smoke showing from a turkey barn approximately 400 ft by 60 feet. Crews entered to find fire involving turkey pens and pine shavings on the floor.
The fire was quickly controlled while crews began to immediately tend to the hundreds of turkey chicks that were now in jeopardy of dying due to the heavy smoke and now cold air entering. All companies pitch in to round up the chicks and relocate them while ventilating the barn and attempting to conserve the heat inside as best as possible.
While many turkey chicks did perish due to fire, heat, smoke or exposure firefighters attempts to preserve as much life and property as possible was commendable.
