Medic Dies After 911 Call in Bensalem
Medic was pronounced dead at Torresdale Hospital
By DANIELLE JOHNSON
Updated 9:41 AM EST, Mon, Mar 8, 2010

Dan McIntosh, a Bensalem paramedic, died after responding to a call of a patient suffering from a mental illness Sunday night.

It happened around 7 p.m. when medics went with police to a home on the 2600 block of Kiansas Avenue.

"As far as I know, there was no weapon involved. It's unclear at this point how the medic was injured or why he died," said Sgt. Andrew Aninsman.

Paramedics arrived first to the scene and when the man fled on foot, the medic, a 13-year veteran of the rescue squad, encountered him first and was hurt when he approached the man.

McIntosh was taken to Torresdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"There's nothing typical about responding to any call, so we need to be cautious no matter what," Sgt. Aninsman said in a Delaware County Times report.

"All we do know is we want to support the family," Sgt. Aninsman said.

McIntosh leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

Police are still investigating what kind of contact the medic had with the man, who has a history of mental issues, police said.

The patient is in police custody.
